It's Jswizzle's favorite band.

I think they are great, though they aren't my favorite band. The high note at the end of the song Delirium Veil is insane.

Here's my 3 favorite power metal albums.

Versailles - Noble

>> Wonderbeast !VADL0E5Xs. 01/06/10(Wed)20:56 No.6872334

Start with Helloween. I'm not entirely sure what you mean by "wussy" vocals, but Helloween isn't "feel good" power metal. Get the Keeper of the Seven Keys album, and let me know what you think

Look into US speed/power - stuff like Destiny's End, Liege Lord, etc.

Try out Savage Circus. It's similar to Blind Guardian, but I actually like it a bit better. Get the Dreamland Manor album. Like almost all power metal, it's got clean vocals, but they are kind of raspy and not girly.

Try Stormwarrior as well. It's a combination of Viking and Power metal. Get the Heading Northe album. It's going to be more "uplifting" than the rest of this stuff, but it's pretty good.

Try Crystal Eyes as well. It's power metal, but it's different than a lot of power metal. It's worth checking out.

Let me know if any of this stuff works for you, I'd be happy to recommend more. I tried to get a broad spectrum of stuff, so that you can try it all. I stayed away from the ultra-symphonic, and the "FUCK YEAH SLAY THE DRAGON" kind of metal, since I'm sure you're not going to like that very much.

In particular I would recommend Kiske-era Helloween (or maybe Deris era if Kiske's vocals bother you), and Savage Circus.
>> Anonymous 01/06/10(Wed)20:56 No.6872340
I really prefer either completely clean, even flowery vocals or something completely harsh, growls, shrieks. I can barely stomach anything in between.
>> Anonymous 01/06/10(Wed)20:56 No.6872344
Well you were talking about power metal, so mistaking major keys to mean a lot of keys is for once acceptable, as opposed to the music being in a major key, which i assume you meant.

Scelerata is pretty good. Surprised I didn't discover this sooner. Thanks for the recommendation! It's good to know there is power metal I haven't heard of, and people who are capable of recommending it.

Where are they from?

>Entry-level tech death

I almost raged, and then I realized that Cynic is pretty entry level. I also never thought of them as tech-death, but rather a weird alien fusion-death hybrid.

probably spain judging from the accent, their videos are fucking hilarious, but metal is notorious for shitty videos anyways. the guitar solos are really amazing though, that's what really gets me.

great music but, damn if i didn't laugh a couple times during this.
>> Glorious Aggressor !!3wkCxQgAjDu 01/06/10(Wed)21:52 No.6873309
yeah, I think I just realized I will never like any real power metal (I don't think Galneryus are really true power metal). The more I hear, the more I despise it. Except the power metal version of the Katy perry song, that was sweet haha. It just can't compare to black metal in my eyes.
>> Anonymous 01/06/10(Wed)21:52 No.6873316
Whatever they are, it is fucking awesome. Even now, what with the new album being more of a prog album, is still really good.
>> Wonderbeast !VADL0E5Xs. 01/06/10(Wed)21:57 No.6873393

Maybe you just haven't found it yet?

I listen to some black metal, and I don't mind it - some of it's great. But for some reason I'm a metalhead that prefers people singing rather than growling, and that's most of the appeal of power metal.

I don't pick fights between genres - I think trying to claim Metal Genre X is better than metal genre Y is asinine, but I personally prefer power metal.

If you don't like it, it has to be either the vocals or the "uplifting" feel of a lot of power metal. I suppose it could be the lyrics, but black metal lyrics aren't really that great most of the time anyway.

One more band to try - Sacred Oath. Check out their self titled.

god fucking dammit. I love these threads but cant stand not being able to download them all right away. I have to fuckin Bookmark them and then go back. after its done DLing.

Have you seen Rhapsody of Fire videos? It's like a DnD nerd's wet dream.
>> Anonymous 01/06/10(Wed)22:00 No.6873464

Personally, Symphony X was my first foray into anything that could be vaguely considered power metal...How do you feel about them, Glorious?
>> Glorious Aggressor !!3wkCxQgAjDu 01/06/10(Wed)22:03 No.6873504
yeah I agree, I'm not like TR00 BLACK MAHTULZ IS BETTER THAN UR SHIT
it's just what I like best, ya know?
Yeah, I realize it has usually poor written lyrics, but that doesn't bother me cause I don't really care about lyrics. And I think one of the things I don't like about power metal is that uplifting aspect. I like "transcendental" " (i.e. Traced in Air) but not something "happy". But again, that's just my personal preferences
>> Jswizzle !tzxenNZQbg 01/06/10(Wed)22:04 No.6873535
omg i know, can't tell my friends lol, btw did you hear about christopher lees new symphonic metal opera thing he's doing?
>> Anonymous 01/06/10(Wed)22:09 No.6873610

I'd check out Blind Guardian and Savage Circus if I were you. I find myself indifferent to most power metal but consider those bands to be some of the best things in metal, ever.

I find most Power Metal isn't "happy" enough... rather, it rehashes the same simple structures of basing songs on simple minor key riffs and melodies. It gets really tiring. Although it's listenable and kind of funny the Katy Perry cover is perfectly illustrative of tedious power metal cliches.
>> Wonderbeast !VADL0E5Xs. 01/06/10(Wed)22:10 No.6873633

Yeah I heard about it. I'm going to get it when it comes out, partly because I'm interested in giving it a listen, but mostly because of the sheer hilarity of it existing in the first place.

Yeah, that makes sense. I guarantee you won't like this song, but if you want to see what over the top cheesy power metal is like when they make a music video, check out the link in this post >>6873444

To each their own. Do you listen to a lot of thrash? Our paths might cross there with some more common ground.
>> Glorious Aggressor !!3wkCxQgAjDu 01/06/10(Wed)22:13 No.6873694
haha sorry to disappoint but I really don't care for much thrash. I don't hate it, but in a lot of ways, it just seems like a watered down version of death metal to me. I can't think of a single thrash band I would say I love. The ironic thing is I'm wearing a shirt of a thrash band right now haha.
>> Anonymous 01/06/10(Wed)22:14 No.6873713
Check out the Coroner I posted above. Probably the only thrash band I listen to.
>> Anonymous 01/06/10(Wed)22:15 No.6873739
I didn't really dig Animals as leaders. their sound is way too clean. Too overproduced.

I'm in my 8th year of listening to metal now, I've explored everything from Aakon Ketreth to Zonaria, and I can only say that "growling" in music is pointless and stupid as fuck. Growling is basically what you would do if someone asked you to make the most annoying, ear-grating sound you possibly could. Why the fuck would anyone think that would make for good music? Think of Windir, for example. Pretty decent music and guitar melodies (Valfar said that's the focus of his music), but in comes the screeching to ruin my nice listening experience and doom it from being taken seriously by any of my friends, let alone myself. Seriously, imagine if you took Mozart's Dies Irae and introduced a retard foaming at the mouth that bellows out RARR RARRR RARRR at the sky in that infamous Horgh from Immortal pose. Fucking ridiculous. What the fuck is wrong with people these days?
>> Anonymous 01/06/10(Wed)22:24 No.6873881
A good friend of mine can growl like a fucking bear. He's gone cybergoth this year though.
>> The Benevolent Stranger !ACDCyzeRac 01/06/10(Wed)22:25 No.6873922
Sometimes it just works with the music, bro.
And most of the time there's some wicked shit going on in the background, that's usually what I listen to instead of focusing on the bad or weak aspects of the music(unless the "growling" is good)

Somtimes, like I might throw a growl here and there for emphasis if ever, but no way would I make it the staple of the music.

And as for focusing on the background, why the fuck have growls there in the first place? Why not just leave it as an instrumental if you're too dumb to think of a matching vocal melody for a real singer?
